Technical Requirements

While the site is usable with a dial-up, modem connection, a broadband (cable or DSL) connection is recommended for viewing the flash movies and listening to the sound recordings.

A free Sibelius Scorch plug-in is needed to view and print the musical scores on this site. A prompt for this download will appear once you have selected a song, or you can download Sibelius Scorch now. The download, which is completely safe for Windows and Mac systems, need only be done once.

A free Quicktime plug-in is needed to listen to sound recordings on this site. A prompt for this download will appear the first time you click on Hear Recording, or you can Quicktime now. If your computer already has Quicktime, the download, which is also completely safe for Windows and Mac systems, will provide the most recent upgrade.

A free Flash plug-in is needed to view the movies in the "Kodály Vision" section.

Conducting a Search

A click on "Search the Collection" will take you to the Search Page (see at right) where you can view all titles in the collection, search for a specific song title, or select musical or cultural parameters for an advanced song search.

A "Search by Category" allows you to search the collection by criteria, including grade level, region, song type, subject matter, and musical categories such as meter or scale type. The best results will be obtained if the search is limited to one or two parameters at a time.

Using Search Results

When you click on a song title, a Scorch score sheet with music and lyrics will appear (see at right). By using the buttons on the top of the Scorch score sheet, you can transpose the music to a different key, save the score sheet to a file on your computer, or print the score sheet.

Each folk song in the collection has been annotated to provide helpful background and musical analysis for classroom use. If you are unfamiliar with terms in the analysis, you may access a glossary at the bottom of every page.

The musical analysis, which can be found below the Scorch score sheet, can also be accessed by a link above the score sheet. If the song has attached game directions or recordings, a link will also be displayed above the score sheet.
